The Access and Alarm group (EN-AA) is responsible for engineering, installation and maintenance of the systems that ensure the safety of the CERN personnel, users and visitors, on all its sites and facilities. It plays a critical role in keeping people safe and protecting the CERN infrastructure.

From video surveillance to intrusion protection, AA designs, installs, operates and manages sophisticated systems that monitor and safeguard all CERN sites. Biometric systems and state of the art access control systems ensure that only trained people and authorized personnel can enter during maintenance periods. Detection and alarm systems ensure the safety of people who carry out activities within CERN’s facilities or simply visit them.

Access Control

The Access Control (AC) section maintains in operational condition the Organisation’s access control, access safety and video surveillance systems. The section manages site access control projects and contributes with expert advice to the design of beam facilities’ access systems.

Alarm Systems

The Alarm Systems (AS) section is responsible for the specification, installation, monitoring and maintenance of the safety systems that protect CERN personnel, users and visitors across all CERN sites and facilities. The team provides and supports fire and gas detection systems, sprinklers systems, emergency evacuation systems, emergency call telephones, and alarm transmission and monitoring systems. Working closely with HSE, project teams and facility stakeholders, the section ensures these systems remain reliable, compliant and effective throughout their lifecycle.

Critical Systems Engineering

The Critical Systems Engineering (CSE) section designs and implements life critical personnel safety systems for CERN’s current and future accelerator installations. The team applies functional safety methodologies to analyze the risks involved and manages the design and implementation of the appropriate preventive and mitigative systems in collaboration with all stakeholders to reduce the risks to an acceptable level.

Project Methods and Deployment

The Project Methods and Deployment (PMD) section builds and commissions safety systems with focus on LS3 successful execution. It guarantees project management best practices, optimizes on-site deployment strategies and manages contracts for maximum efficiency.
