The SMM Group develops and maintain a centralized competence in Survey, Mechatronic systems, Test and Measurement. The group is in charge of maintaining a competence in the development of radiation tolerant electronics, and provides support CERN wide for radiation tests and radiation monitoring for evaluating the dose to electronics installed in radiation areas. The groups develops robotic platforms adapted to intervention in the accelerator environment, and deploy those solutions in collaboration with all groups in the Accelerator and Technology sector. SMM is able to provide computing support for data acquisition, data processing and data analysis, as well as for data storage related to all these activities.
The SMM group is responsible for the geodetic metrology of the accelerators, of their associated beam transfer lines and detectors, for the whole CERN site. These tasks include the alignment of the accelerator elements, the metrology of detectors for assembly and positioning on the beam lines and as-built measurements.
The group is also in charge of the design, installation and maintenance of permanent monitoring and alignment systems in specific areas. To achieve this, SMM handles the geodetic aspects of CERN’s reference systems and their related geometrical infrastructure, as well as the production of geodetic and mathematical models combined with survey data processing algorithms. The group computes the beam lines in the CERN reference frame (CCS). It carries out quality controls and metrological works on the accelerator and detector prototypes and components when the classical workshop methods cannot be applied.
Research and development related to all these tasks for the existing and future machines and experiments and their upgrades is part of the mandate.
The SMM group is involved in the design and is responsible for the operation of the mechatronics of the LHC collimators and all other beam intercepting devices (BIDs) of the CERN accelerators and experimental lines. It designs electronics and remote control systems to ensure the positioning of the collimators, targets and massive dumps with accuracies down to the micrometre level. Specific issues related to hazardous areas often require the development of custom solutions. The group supports the n_TOF Data Acquisition System and the UA9 crystal experiment in the SPS and the LHC.
The development of robotic solutions and their use to support equipment groups on remote inspections and tele-manipulation in radioactive areas is a key responsibility of the SMM group.
SMM supports the equipment groups in the radiation tests of the commercial off-the-shelf electronic components for radiation-tolerant design of accelerator control systems. It coordinates the CERN High Energy Accelerator Mixed field facility (CHARM) and the CC60 facility for radiation tests of electronic components and systems within the Radiation to Electronics (R2E) framework. Additionally, the group is in charge of the on-line monitoring of the radiation effects on the electronic equipment located in radioactive areas in the accelerators and the experiments.
The group also develops and provides support CERN-wide for all test & measurement systems and data analysis applications based on LabVIEW and a selected set of National Instruments and Alliance Members' products. The group is responsible for the LHC Post Mortem Analysis software based on LabVIEW and develops and maintains the integration of LabVIEW desktop and real-time in the accelerator infrastructure with interfaces to control middleware, timing and databases.
