Network Operation

The EL group is responsible for the CERN electrical distribution network from 400kV to 400/230V. Its main missions are to operate, maintain, extend and renovate the network, analyse and make projections for CERN electrical energy consumption and manage relations with the energy suppliers.

The group is also in charge of making modifications and extensions to the network as required by new projects, in terms of project studies, equipment procurement, installation, supervision and commissioning.

A section of the group is responsible for providing all cable installations for accelerators and experiments. This includes a great variety of HT and LV cables distributed over the entire CERN site and LHC ring. Fibre optics installation is also provided by this section.

Mandate

The Contract and Computing Support (CCS) section is part of the Electrical Engineering Group (EN-EL) in the Engineering Department (EN) at CERN.
The EN-EL-CCS section provides technical expertise in the fields of Relational Database Management Systems and CAD Systems. The section is responsible for the development and support of the in-house information system (GESMAR), the implementation of the needs of the EN-EL group in the Computer Aided Maintenance Management System (Infor EAM), the development of EL-trade applications in the 3D CAD system (CATIA-SMARTEAM), the organisation of the group’s data in the CERN Engineering Data Management System (EDMS) and the computing support for the Optical Fibre Management System (NETGEO2). The section is also in charge of the development of interfaces between these systems and other CERN systems.
In addition, the EN-EL-CCS section ensures technical-economic follow-up of service contracts, and provides support in the preparation of invitations to tenders for large service contracts.

Mandate

The Documentation & Design Office (DDO) section is part of the Electrical Engineering Group (EN-EL) in the Engineering Department (EN) at CERN.
The EN-EL-DDO section is responsible for the carrying out and coordination of electrical and integration studies for projects and works within the EN-EL group, and ensures that they comply with the EN-EL engineering standards and long-term roadmap.
The section is also in charge of the proper archiving of all the technical documentation of the group and keeping up-to-date the databases related to the electrical equipment operated and installed within the group.
Finally, the section manages the equipment-related activities for the HTA/HTB protection relays.

In addition, the section is also responsible for the management of works related to the CERN electrical distribution network.

Mandate

The Electrical Network Control (ENC) section is part of the Electrical Engineering Group (EN-EL) in the Engineering Department (EN) at CERN.
The EN-EL-ENC section is responsible for the management of the CERN Electrical Network Supervision (ENS) system. This includes all design, procurement, installation, commissioning, configuration and maintenance activities of the necessary computing and control infrastructure required following upgrades and consolidations of the CERN electrical transmission and distribution network.
The section responsibilities also include design, software development, installation and maintenance of PLC based control systems under the group’s responsibility. 
Furthermore, the section manages the development and maintenance of software applications for data configuration of the ENS system and for energy consumption tracking.

The Electrical Network Projects (ENP) section is part of the Electrical Engineering Group (EN-EL) in the Engineering Department (EN) at CERN.
The EN-EL-ENP section is responsible for the management of projects related to the consolidation and upgrade of the CERN electrical transmission and distribution network within the group and coordinates all associated design, procurement, installation, commissioning and handover activities with support from other sections of the group as required.
Finally, the section manages the equipment-related activities for the HTB equipment, HTB and HTA transformers, diesel generators and HTB and HTA cables accessories. The section also provides the technical expertise for HTB and HTA cables.

The Fibre Optics and Cabling (FC) section is part of the Electrical Engineering Group (EN-EL) in the Engineering Department (EN) at CERN.
The EN-EL-FC section ensures the technical expertise in the field of fibre optics, is responsible for the CERN optical fibre infrastructure, and provides the installation of signal cables, standardised racks and DC power cables for magnets in the accelerators and experimental areas. The section provides engineering support to the CERN users, centralises their cabling requests and organises the installation activities through external industrial-support contractors. The section additionally provides support to the EN-EL group for planning and resources coordination, for the procurement and logistics of cables, connectors and low-voltage accessories for electrical installation works, and for radiation safety related aspects when working in radiation controlled areas.

Mandate

The Electrical Network Maintenance (MT) section is part of the Electrical Engineering Group (EN-EL) in the Engineering Department (EN) at CERN.
The EN-EL-MT section is responsible for the maintenance of the electrical equipment making up the CERN electrical transmission and distribution network, except for corrective actions performed within the framework of the EN-EL electrical standby service. Its main missions are to define global strategies related to electrical equipment, organize and carry out preventive maintenance activities, perform scheduled corrective actions, ensure that these activities are correctly introduced and tracked in the relevant databases and implement spare parts policies defined within the group.
In addition, the section is responsible for the management of some specific maintenance and consolidation projects and works on the electrical network.
Finally, the section manages the equipment-related activities for the LV switchboards (type 1, 2 and 4), UPS systems, central battery systems, 48 V DC systems, transient recording systems as well as diverse electro-mechanic and electronic chassis.

Mandate

The Electrical Network Operation (OP) section is part of the Electrical Engineering Group (EN-EL) in the Engineering Department (EN) at CERN.
The EN-EL-OP section is responsible for the operation of the CERN electrical transmission and distribution network from 400 kV AC to 48 V DC. Its main objective is to ensure operational continuity and availability of this network. In addition, the section organizes the stand-by service of the group, carries out periodic tests, manages electricity supply contracts, provides technical support for projects and works as well as on-site commissioning activities and supports the EN-EL group in the overall activity coordination.
This section also provides user’s requirements, support and feedback in relation to the SCADA system.
Furthermore, this section is responsible for EN-EL stores and the management of stored electrical spare parts.
Finally, the section manages the equipment-related activities for the general emergency system (AUG).
